Review : NOS4A2 by Joe Hill

Victoria McQueen has a secret gift for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. On her Raleigh Tuff Burner bike, she makes her way to a rickety covered bridge that, within moments, takes her wherever she needs to go, whether it’s across Massachusetts or across the country.
Charles Talent Manx has a way with children. He likes to take them for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the NOS4A2 vanity plate. With his old car, he can slip right out of the everyday world, and onto the hidden roads that transport them to an astonishing – and terrifying – playground of amusements he calls “Christmasland.”

Then, one day, Vic goes looking for trouble—and finds Manx. That was a lifetime ago. Now Vic, the only kid to ever escape Manx’s unmitigated evil, is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx never stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. He’s on the road again and he’s picked up a new passenger: Vic’s own son.” (goodreads)

I have a love/hate relationship with Joe Hill. I think he is one of the most original horror writer out there. My problem is that i really have a hard time getting into his work.

NOS4A2 is part of the hate side of this relationship. First, i have to say that the story is interesting and refreshing. I enjoyed the concept and all, but something was missing.
To me, the biggest flaw of this book is the characters. Vic, one of the main character, is so boring. She felt so flat to me and i just couldn’t bring myself to care about her or any of the other characters really. Characters are really important to me when i read a book, it makes a big difference in my rating, and this one lost a lot of point because of the lack of interesting protagonist.  Charles Manx was intriguing, he’s the reason why i didn’t stop reading sooner.
the writing didn’t help either. Just like the characters, it was dull and extremely dry.  it didn’t grab my attention like some other books can do.
i’m going to be honest with you, i didn’t finish this book. i just couldn’t. Nothing interesting was really happening, the characters were boring and i didn’t care much about the writing style. Sadly, NOS4A2 is not a book that i can recommend.

NOS4A2 : 1.5/5 (not finished)
