Review : Attack on Titan ( Vol. 1,2,3 & 4) by Hajime Isayama

What’s left of humanity survives in fear for their lives in this exciting, terrifying new manga that’s a number one bestseller in Japan. Humankind is down to just a few thousand people who live in a city surrounded by three concentric walls. The walls protect them from their enemies, the ravenous giants known as the Titans. The Titans appear to have only one purpose: to consume humanity.

For one hundred years, what’s left of mankind has lived in the city on earth, protected by walls that tower over even the Titans. Untouched by the Titans for a century, humanity has become complacent. But Eren Jaeger has had enough. While his fellow citizens are content to hide, Jaeger has the passion to take action to not only protect the city, but to learn what the Titans actually are. But on his first mission he comes face to face with horrors beyond his imagination… and secrets from his own past that could shift the tides of war. “

I have to say, i don’t read a lot of manga. I’m just never really intrigued by them… but lately, my roommate bought this boxset and she kept talking about how good it was, so I gave it a go.

and I love it. The storyline is original (I haven’t read many stories with titans!). It’s also very gore and brutal and it was glorious. It’s the horror fan talking here, but damn, those monsters are so cruel. I found them to be extremely entertaining. The story is also about humanity and how humans react in a hopeless situation. trying to survive just to face a other day of fear, it’s not an easy task. The writing is great. Isayama is capable of creating a fascinating world. His writing is powerful and terribly emotional, i felt my heart break a couple of times. He also gave us some very interesting characters. I felt invested in their storyline form the start. Eren is such a passionate boy. He annoyed me a bit at first, but i discover that he was more than just an angry boy. Mikasa is so complex, i feel like even with 4 volumes down, it’s hard to get to know her. She’s badass and she will do anything to protect her friends. That is what i like about her. She’s fighter, not a damsel in distress. Armin is by far my favorite character. He is incredibly smart, but he feels weak and he hates himself for that. it’s hard for him. I can’t wait to see where is character is going to go from here. The side characters are mostly faceless for me, i don’t really care about them right now. I’m hoping to see more of them in the next volumes.

Even if i’m not a big fan of the art, i’m enjoying the storyline so very much. It’s dark, gory, emotional and well written. Would recommend!
