Review: The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough

Antony and Cleopatra. Helen of Troy and Paris. Romeo and Juliet. And now . . . Henry and Flora.

For centuries Love and Death have chosen their players. They have set the rules, rolled the dice, and kept close, ready to influence, angling for supremacy. And Death has always won. Always.

Could there ever be one time, one place, one pair whose love would truly tip the balance?

Meet Flora Saudade, an African-American girl who dreams of becoming the next Amelia Earhart by day and sings in the smoky jazz clubs of Seattle by night. Meet Henry Bishop, born a few blocks and a million worlds away, a white boy with his future assured — a wealthy adoptive family in the midst of the Great Depression, a college scholarship, and all the opportunities in the world seemingly available to him.

The players have been chosen. The dice have been rolled. But when human beings make moves of their own, what happens next is anyone’s guess.”

I knew i needed this book the second i saw it’s description. Death and love playing a game together. Yes, just yes.

The storyline is captivating from the start. absolutely love it! I don’t want to say much about the story, all you have to know is that this novel is a reflexion on love, on the act of loving and on life and it’s incredibly well-done. friendship, family, romance, this books shows how hard every aspects of love can be. It’s cruel sometimes, but also beautiful if you decide to take a chance.

The characters were very interesting. They all have something special. Henry and his big heart, flora and her dreams, I love them, I love their romance. Love and Death are also great characters, absolutely adored their interactions. Ethan also has  special place in my heart, such a smart boy, such a tragic storyline.

And the writing is magnificent. I have found so many beautiful quotes in this story. The writer really knows how to write about love and how to create a wonderful atmosphere. Set in the 1930s in Seattle, i found this setting to be very enjoyable. The dangerous vibe of the city, the jazz music and the romance were a perfect mix.

I adored this one guys. Highly recommend.
