Review : Spells for Lost Things

Willow has never felt like she belonged anywhere and is convinced that the only way to find a true home is to travel the world. But her plans to act on her dream are put on hold when her aloof and often absent mother drags Willow to Salem, Massachusetts, to wrap up the affairs of an aunt Willow didn’t even know she had. An aunt who may or may not have been a witch.

There, she meets Mason, a loner who’s always felt out of place and has been in and out of foster homes his entire life. He’s been classified as one of the runaways, constantly searching for ways to make it back to his mom; even if she can’t take care of him, it’s his job to try and take care of her. Isn’t it?

Naturally pulled to one another, Willow and Mason set out across Salem to discover the secret past of Willow’s mother, her aunt, and the ambiguous history of her family. During all of this, the two can’t help but act on their natural connection. But with the amount of baggage between them—and Willow’s growing conviction her family might be cursed—can they manage to hold onto each other?

I was so surprised by this book, it really took a turn I was not expecting. First, let me just says that it’s definitely a slow burn. It takes the time to setup characters, and relationships, so for the first half of it, nothing much happens. Not that this is a bad thing, actually, I quite enjoyed it. Mainly because there’s a very particular vibe to this book that I really like, it’s cozy and sweet, makes you want to grab a blankets and get lost into the story. But the cozy vibe of it doesn’t mean you don’t get some deeper elements. Actually, it gets pretty serious and heartbreaking in those last chapters, which is what took me by surprise. I was not expecting all the feels. My heart hurt for Mason.

Speaking of Mason, I really like him and Willow. They were fun to follow around. I think Mason in particular was fantastic. I love a fun, nerdy character, and his obsession with the sky and the stars was so adorable! His romance with Willow was the cutest and I really enjoyed their little moments together. I also think that all the side characters were great! The witchy aunts and Mason’s foster family created the perfect ensemble. They also gave us some really funny moments, especially the aunts. I think they were awesome and I want more of them please.

and of course, a book set in Salem with witches and mysteries will always win my heart. Perfect book for autumn if you want something magical but not scary. Highly recommend this one.
