Review : Crescent City 1 & 2 by Sarah J. Maas

House of Earth and Blood + House of Sky and Breath

Bound by blood.
Tempted by desire.
Unleashed by destiny.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

It is always an exciting time to enter a Sarah J. Maas book because you know you’ll meet some interesting characters and you know that the action is going to be great and the twists interesting.

The first book in this series took me a little while to get into. I would say at least until i got to the 40% mark, i wasn’t sure if i was enjoying this or not. There’s a couple things that bugged me, mostly how everyone seemed to see Bryce as this sexual object, drove me insane. Take a shot every time someone comments on her appearance, you’d be drunk pretty quickly. But Bryce is a fantastic main character ; She’s strong, she’s smart, she’s caring and she doesn’t take shit from anyone. All this makes her the perfect hero for this type of story. Hunt, i’m still on the fence about, definitely some interesting elements to him, and i do like him by himself, i’m just not sure i love him with Bryce. Maybe i’m in the minority here, but i’ve rolled my eyes alot.

Especially in the second book ; where i felt like all their chemistry was gone, leaving behind only the physical connection. I guess we’ll see what the future holds for these two.

Speaking of book 2, i also had some issues with it. Mainly that there was wayyy too many POV and i found some of them very boring. I feel like some parts could have been cut off and it wouldn’t really impact the story itself. It was abit too long for my taste. I do love the side characters, most of them, i think Ruhn in particular has an extremely interesting plot and i CANNOT wait to see what will happenned next. I just love him and his friends so much.

The overall story is entertaining. There’s alot of intriguing elements that have been thrown around in those two books and i’m really curious to see where we are going to end up in. Sarah J. Maas is really good at taking us down different roads, usually we always end up in a completely different place that we were expecting in the first book of her series, so this is going to be interesting.

Also, the ending of House of Sky and Breath was the most epic i have read in a very long time. Talk about a cliffhanger. GIVE US THE NEXT BOOK MISS MAAS.

HOUSE OF EARTH AND BLOOD : 4/5
HOUSE OF SKY AND BREATH : 3.5/5
